Pijp & Rivierenbuurt

PIJP & RIVIERENBUURT

Location and History
This area is located directly south of Amsterdam’s city Centre and is subdivided in the area’s Oude Pijp, Nieuwe Pijp, Diamantbuurt, IJsselbuurt, Scheldebuurt and Rijnbuurt. The Pijp is example of 19th century revolution-build. It was built to ease the overpopulated Jordaan to house blue color workers. The Pijp became an area of long streets with a typical image: generally four stories with a canopy, the height staggered between the plots, each piece topped with a white roof with a cap and lifting bar, and each house is three windows wide. The southern part of the Pijp and Rivierenbuurt was built later, around 1925 in accordance with the famous architecture style called: Amsterdam School and Berlage.

Lifestyle
De Pijp is a former working class neighbourhood which has seen its share of gentrification over the years. Now it’s a hipstery ‘hood with charming cafés, underground bars and a fair amount of street art. The Albert Cuypmarkt is a must see, it is a daily food market with cool shops and great street food. You can find quirky clothing, street food as well as fresh fruit & veggies. De Pijp as we know it today is without a doubt a melting pot of cultures and nationalities. The young, the old, students, artists, yuppies, and families have all chosen to make De Pijp their home. It is one of the most cosmopolitan and vibrant districts of Amsterdam. Like the district Jordaan, de Pijp is brimming with fantastic cafés, restaurants, coffee shops and bars. The Pijp is perfect for those looking to live in a bustling, centrally located neighborhood.

Highlights
The Albert Cuyp Market is one the most famous and busiest street market in the Netherlands with over 230 shops and draws thousands of visitors each day. Just around the corner of the Albert Cuyp you can find Sarphati Park. This small green oasis is in the middle of trendy Pijp. The Heineken Beer Experience recounts the history of the brand and shows visitors how beer was brewed in the past.

Housing Market
This area is very diverse in its range in house prices. Hot, trendy, young and hip versus the Rivierenbuurt with its more common sense affordable properties.
